Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a basic understanding of a broad variety of skills? Have you ever tried to start a project but could never quite find the gumption to finish it? Have you ever thought “If only I had taken the time to learn” or “If I could (fill in the blank) I would be so much more prepared for (fill in the blank)”?
Well now is your chance to make a change. Change your “if only I had”s to “I can do”s. Start the Beehive Challenge!
What is the Challenge you ask?
It is jump back in time. A journey to the early 20th Century. It is the revival of old traditions.
The Challenge is to complete the Beehive Girls’ handbook from the early 1900’s.
It is a chance to empower yourself. It is a chance to grow and serve.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has taken many approaches to the rearing of teenagers. This system’s approach was established to teach girls life-skills through the completion of various activities, as youth progress through the hive. As the eras changed, and as the Church grew, the Young Women’s program has adapted to fit the needs of girls around the world. The changes that have come from this progress are incredible. Everyday girls, leaders, mothers, women are impacted by the wonderful Personal Progress program.
The purpose of this challenge is not to detract from this incredible blessing that the new program provides, but to expand the skill sets of those willing to embark on the journey. It is the program of our LDS heritage. If they could do it, why can’t we?
They were not given the luxuries that we have today. They had to do the hard work. In the modern world of technology, we are given everything and are loosing the knowledge of our grandmothers.
Why not relearn what they did? Why not take the Challenge and experience what it was like back in the days of the early Church? Why not become a Beehive Girls?
So How do I start?

The links above will take you to PDF or web versions of the references in the handbook.
(Download the files that work for you and save them for easy reference)
Again, this is meant to be a personal challenge and swarms are no longer organized with any group or other program.
Look through the handbook. Read the requirements. Set goals for yourself to advance through the different levels.
If you want to work with other girls, go ahead! Do research, learn, share! The purpose is to gain knowledge, to gain experience. What we learn is the only treasure that cannot be taken from our Spirits.
If these girls could go on these grand adventures in skirts? What is stopping us? What is it that we can’t do?
As you progress, share what you have learned with us on the blog. Leave a comment with a link to something you found interesting, with a project you have completed, with something that made the difference in your life.
Take the Challenge. Learn a couple knew skills What can it hurt? All it takes is a little determination.
A note for our lovely sisters who are not LDS:
This challenge is not exclusively for those who practice the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many Beehive groups were formed similarly as modern day Girl Scout troops are (around schools and neighborhoods). Girls of many different faiths were encouraged to participate as this program is a personal journey of learning. If there are aspects that are very “Mormon” to you, understand that it was a Church based group, but that we all believe in the same Father. Simply alter the task you want to complete to match your own belief system. But please! Still enjoy the fun of the challenge and don’t let the simple matter of affiliation deter you. This is just a tool for creating a fun way of learning new skills and drawing closer to Father.
“Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is decietful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
